    Prerequisite: None

    Catalog Description: This course is a first hand presentation of local trade resources for the Professional Production Designer for film and TV. Students go to a select number of local companies that supply various props and set dressing necessary for creating the physical design elements used in set design. Students will be shown how to select furniture, window treatments, accessories, and other props for set decoration. Students are shown the rental costs of these items and how to use them to create budgets for specific projects.

  3. Course Objectives:

    Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

    1. Identify the many Trade Resources available to the Production Designer.
    2. Analyze and use the available source books to determine how to locate specific items needed for a Set Design.
    3. Identify and describe each local Prop House and its specific resources.
    4. Explain the role of the Prop Master and his or her duties and how these duties affect the Production Designer.
    5. Interview Production Design Professionals in the working world, and complete written and oral reports on these interviews.
    6. Analyze the various costs of rental and purchased items for a ‘typical’ project and, then, create a working budget.

    The student will:

    1. Students will interview Production Design Professionals and develop and present reports detailing sound professional practice strategies.
    2. Students will research and analyze the various costs of rental and purchased items for a set design project and then create a working budget and schedule that demonstrate understanding of the logistics of developing designs for and delivering props to film and T.V. sets and locations.
